Getting to Grace on Sunday Morning

One of the nice advantages of a church situated in a major metropolitan area is that there are usually multiple modes of transportation. Grace Lutheran Church, San Mateo has this advantage.

We are located at 29th Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo, California. Our office phone is: 650-345-9068.

Here are suggestions for getting to Grace on Sunday morning for worship services at 9:00 AM and for Sunday School & Adult Bible Class at 10:30 AM. Our doors are open at 8:30 AM on Sundays. Adult Bible Class & Sunday School concludes at 11:30 AM on Sunday.

Private Auto

Sunday morning has little traffic on the main highways, compared to other daytime commutes. For Sunday services, our congregational members travel from as far away as: Novato (North Bay), Modesto (Central Valley), Livermore (East Bay), Santa Clara (South Bay), and San Gregorio (Pacific Ocean shore).

From the north, take I-280 south to CA-92, head east to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue; or take US 101 south to CA-92, head west to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue.

From the east, take CA-92 west across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, continue on CA-92 to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue.

From the south, take I-280 north to CA-92, head east to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue; or take US 101 north to CA-92, head west to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue.

From the west, take CA-92 east from Half Moon Bay, crossing I-280 and over the hill to Alameda de las Pulgas, then drive south to 29th Avenue.

Public Auto

There are many taxi companies in the area. On your computer or smart phone, search for "san mateo taxi" to find their contact information. Uber is popular in the San Francisco Bay Area (https://www.uber.com ) as is Lyft (www.lyft.com ).

Bus

Bus service in San Mateo County is provided by samTrans (www.samtrans.com ). One bus services our neighborhood on Sunday mornings, #294. It runs from Half Moon Bay to the San Mateo Medical Center, and return. The eastbound #294 on Sunday arrives at the signed stop at 28th Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas, at about 7:35 AM. This stop is a half block from our church. The westbound #294 on Sunday arrives at the signed stop at 28th Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas at about 6:10 AM, 7:15 AM, and 8:15 AM. These times are subject to change, so check the website before taking a bus ride.

Caltrain

Commuter train service in San Mateo County is provided by Caltrain ( www.caltrain.com ). The closest station to our church is Hillsdale station, across from Hillsdale Mall on the El Camino Real. The station is about 1.3 miles from our church. The earliest southbound train on Sunday arrives at Hillsdale station from San Francisco at 8:52 AM. You will need a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to take you the rest of the way to church. You can call our office during the week (650-345-9068), to see if a member is available to pick you up from the station with their car. The earliest northbound train on Sunday arrives at Hillsdale station from San Jose at 9:35 AM, which is too late for our worship service. These times are subject to change, so check the website before taking a train ride.

BART

Rapid transit service in the San Francisco Bay Area is provided by the BART, i.e., the Bay Area Rapid Transit (www.bart.gov ). The closest BART station to our church is at Millbrae Transit Center. The station is about 9.4 miles from our church. The earliest BART train arriving at Millbrae on Sunday morning is 9:11 AM, which is too late for our Sunday worship services, since it takes about 20 minutes to drive here from Millbrae. For other worship services and church activities, BART may be the preferred mode of transit, due to its connections throughout northern San Mateo County, San Francisco, and the East Bay. For direct transfers in our area between BART and Caltrain, use the Millbrae station.

Other Transit Systems

San Francisco Bay Area residents often use a "Clipper Card," which is a type of rechargeable debit card, to pay for their transit services. "Clipper" (www.clippercard.com ) is used by nearly all Bay Area transit systems. It includes a "Thruway Bus" connection to the city of San Francisco. Amtrak trains that stop at Emeryville include: California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, San Joaquin, and Capitol Corridor. For direct transfers between Amtrak trains and BART trains, use the Richmond and Oakland Coliseum stations.

The San Francisco Bay Area has three international airports: San Francisco (SFO), Oakland (OAK), and San Jose (SJC). SFO and OAK have direct connections to the BART system, which has stations on-site.
