September 2009
Always a Student

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Prov. 22:6

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed, And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31-32 (NKJ)

It has been said that teachers stop being teachers when they cease being students. This is true not only of teachers but of Christians as well. Sometimes it is assumed that Christian Education is only for children. If this is true then it becomes easy to understand why the Rite of Confirmation is often confused with graduation from the educational agencies of the church.

While the truth of God’s word remains the same from the time of the Apostles to today, it
is also true that Dr. Luther’s comment that the Scriptures are so simple that a Child of seven may understand the central message of Salvation in Christ Jesus alone, the scriptures are so complex that a theologian of a lifetime cannot begin to plum their depths.

September is often seen as a time to emphasize the importance of ongoing Education in the Word of God. So this month I am taking this opportunity to remind each and every one of the wonderful opportunities that are offered for each person to grow in both faith and knowledge through the word of God.

Several new opportunities will be offered this year! On the second Sunday of each month beginning in October, at 10:30 a.m., Pastor will offer new prospective members and School parents of Grace Lutheran School the opportunity to learn more about the Lutheran
faith in a class entitled, “Lutheranism for School Parents.”

At the same time, the LWML will offer a Bible study for women of the Church. The Elders will offer a Bible Study for all others not included in the groups above that will explore “How the Church confesses her faith.”

Sunday School for preschool children through grade 8 will be offered each Sunday beginning in September at 10:15 a.m. each week. Check the bulletin for exact dates. Regular Bible class for Adults will be held on the other Sundays in the Church Library at 10:30 a.m.

The Tuesday Morning Bible study will continue the Study of Leviticus each Tuesday Morning as noted in the monthly schedule. There are special times offered during the week
for women to gather for study either at church or home, and for the youth of the church to gather both for study and for a social time. See the monthly calendar for time and place.

All of this is in addition to your home time of teaching your family the will of Christ, and the
gathering together of God’s people in the Divine Service. In this way you might always
be a student (disciple) of Jesus! May Christ strengthen and Keep you in the faith.
